Cloud computing 'booming despite downturn'

23/10/2009 Cloud computing 'booming despite downturn'The recession has not dampened the global popularity of cloud computing, it has been revealed.

Research carried out by business technology services provider Avanade found there has been a 320 per cent increase over the last nine months in firms reporting that they are either testing or planning to implement the technology.

The study also found that the overwhelming preference of companies is for hybrid rather than cloud-only models, with just five per cent of those surveyed taking the latter option

Tyson Hartman, global chief technology officer at Avanade, commented: "For very large organisations, the hybrid approach is logical and prudent. At this stage of cloud computing maturity, not every computing system is appropriate for the cloud. "

He added that firms are rightly reluctant to replace decades of legacy systems by moving them over to the cloud

Earlier this week Benny Har-Even, technology editor at IT Pro, said that questions remain over the best ways to share data online using cloud computing.
