Clued-up businesses 'can avoid making redundancies'

08/09/2010 Clued-up businesses 'can avoid making...Many private sector businesses have avoided making redundancies by adopting a 'survivor's syndrome' and becoming more innovative in order to retain staff.

This is according to John Taylor, chief executive of employment relations organisation Acas, who said that firms will in many instances make redundancy their final option.

"In the long term those organisations which have dealt with their workforce in a fair, open, transparent kind of way will reap the rewards in terms of less labour turnover [and] less absenteeism as and when the economy starts to recover," he claimed.

Mr Taylor noted that by offering flexible working or part-time hours, businesses can adapt to the tough climate.

Another incentive is to follow the example of Nissan, which operated four days a week and offered training to staff on the fifth day.

According to research from the Institute of Leadership & Management and Management Today magazine, companies that have taken measures such as these during the recession have seen trust increase from the workforce in their CEOs and senior management.
