Could mentoring and support help women's career progress?

07/02/2012 Could mentoring and support help women's career...Businesses that offer mentoring and support could be crucial to nurturing female talent in the technology industry and eventually increasing the number of women on boards.

This is according to Maggie Berry, managing director of Womenintechnology.co.uk, who set out the possible solutions to improving female representation in a recent blog.

She suggested that more needs to be done to highlight and celebrate the positive effect women board members have on an organisation. Other solutions would be to eradicate the 'motherhood penalty' by supporting women who take career breaks and set up more groups like the 30% Club to support firms that want to increase their diversity.

The blog also features a recent survey of women in IT. Just 13 per cent of women supported the introduction of mandatory quotas for women on boards.

It has been featured along with other BCSWomen members on Sarah Burnett's blog, a research director for public sector BPO at Nelson Hall.

She wrote: "I am among the majority of tech women that do not agree with quotas. Yet we all recognize that something must be done to improve on the current situation."

Ms Berry stressed that it is up to business leaders to ensure that talented women progress in a company without quotas.
