Could networking grow female talent pool organically?

20/02/2012 Could networking grow female talent pool...Networking could be one way for the number of women accessing senior roles to increase, according to Piya Khanna, executive coach and founder of Change to Succeed.

She stressed the need for the female talent pool to grow organically and suggested that women who can access mentors and role models will be more successful than those who do not.

"It's important to provide opportunities for women to meet other women and even men who have successfully risen through the ranks," she said.

Earlier this month, prime minister David Cameron said that while he does not favour introducing mandatory quotas to increase female representation on boardrooms, he will consider them if the situation is not improved.

Ms Khanna claimed that this could lead to 'tokenism' and is demeaning to women.

Other ways to boost women's careers, she suggested, is to offer flexible working, which "needs to be first nature, rather than a special case scenario to allow women to participate in the economy as they would like to".

She also called for more affordable and accessible childcare facilities and back-to-work programmes that help women re-skill and return to work.
