Could technology research be cut?

10/09/2010 Could technology research be cut? Science and technology research conducted within universities could be cut in next month's spending review, business secretary Vince Cable has warned.

In a speech this week he said that the government would look to "ration research funding by excellence and back research teams of international quality - and screen out mediocrity – regardless of where they are and what they do".

He claimed that UK taxpayers should not be forced to fund research that is "neither commercially useful nor theoretically outstanding".

To project the country further into the field of science, Mr Cable said that research should be transformed into innovation and build stronger links with the business community.

Creating a network of Technology and Innovation Centres will be another suggestion put forward by the secretary ahead of the spending review.

Also this week, science minister David Willetts told university vice-chancellors that there is too much focus spent on research in institutions than on the quality of teaching.

Currently, the government spends £4.3 billion a year on university research.
