Data engineers could be brought in to encrypt devices

01/02/2012 Data engineers could be brought in to encrypt...There could be a requirement for more people in data engineer jobs as greater encryption is deployed in businesses.

Due to the increased use of employees who synchronise their work and personal devices, IT security is becoming more important to many managers.

Clive Taylor, founding director of Sesai Consulting Limited, advised firms to assume all personal devices are hostile and encrypt data.

"Put security into the application, encrypt data within the application and encrypt data transferred to [and] from the company backend," he said.

"Web-based mail keeps email data on the company servers. [Companies should] provide encrypted USB memory sticks to store Office documents, et cetera."

His comments come after it was suggested that businesses are recognising the trend of BYOD (bring your own device), which although it has existed for many years, has become more common.

"BYOD opens up a whole can of worms around compliance and also a lot of technical issues. If a company supplies staff with USB drives, then it has the right to enforce full drive encryption. If a staff member brings their own, then it's not the company's property, nor is the data," warned Datadefender.co.uk's director Graeme Batsman.
