Demand for Windows 7 migration workers to outstrip supply

31/08/2010 Demand for Windows 7 migration workers to outstrip...A number of IT jobs could be created as companies begin upgrading their Windows software.

According to research by IT industry analyst Gartner, businesses worldwide will need an abundance of IT staff to help the migration from Windows XP and Windows 2000 to the latest Microsoft operating system Windows 7.

In fact, during 2011 and 2012, demand for workers in this process is likely to outstrip supply, says Gartner.

This, the firm says, will result in driving up service rates companies pay to have their systems upgraded.

"We estimate that large and midsize organizations worldwide will migrate approximately 250 million PCs to Windows 7, during the migration timeline, so it makes sense for organisations that plan to leverage external services to line up service providers early," said Charles Smulders, managing vice president at Gartner.

Gartner's research follows the recent publication of the ICT Labour Market from e-skills UK.

It found that, while overall demand for labour and skills in the UK was down two per cent during first quarter of 2010, demand for ICT staff rose five per cent to approximately 86,000 positions.
