Employees still use simple passwords

05/03/2010 Employees still use simple passwordsPeople who have a career in IT have been found to use passwords that are easy for criminals to decode, according to new research.

The Consumer Password Worst Practices report by the Imperva Application Defense Center (ADC) was released after 32 million passwords were deciphered and published online in December last year in one major case of cyber crime.

It was found that of these passwords, the most commonly used were 123456 and Password.

Other popular phrases were Princess, babygirl, iloveyou and monkey.

ADC created the report to highlight the importance of securing a password to protect company information and to ensure that personal users know how to guard their information online.

The report suggested that users create a password that is of at least eight characters, with letters, numbers and symbols and is not a word that can be found in the dictionary. It also strongly recommended that staff use different passwords for every website or account they have.
