09/09/2010 Encouraging young people into IT 'needs a big...Getting young people to enter a career in IT is a huge project and needs a big push, claims Maggie Berry, director of womenintechnology.co.uk.

She said that in order for the UK to be at the forefront of the industry, the government needs to get behind the cause.

Her comments are echoed by the Council for Industry and Higher Education, which has called for the government to acknowledge that the creative, digital and IT industries are a priority area for boosting skills shortages.

Ms Berry noted that one of the issues of the IT skills shortage is a lack of knowledge about careers.

"There are loads of opportunities and things you can do within [IT], but they are not jobs that you would necessarily know about," she explained.

"It's new, and jobs are coming up all the time. There's lots of exciting stuff that is out there, and I don't think people know about it."

To deliver skills from an earlier age, she suggested that schools should teach the underlying technologies of IT and not just how to use computers.
