Equality Bill proposes protection against dual discrimination

02/07/2009 Equality Bill proposes protection against dual...Ministers have proposed that the Equality Bill contain a clause for the protection of people who can be doubly discriminated against.

Britons who allege discrimination at present must make separate claims for issues like age, race, disability and gender.

Under the new plans, people will be given the right to make a single claim when they feel that they have been discriminated against on two counts.

For example, an ethnic minority woman may make a claim for race and gender discrimination, while a disabled elderly man could allege ageism and disability discrimination.

Solicitor general Vera Baird, who is leading the bill in parliament, said: "People's identities are multi-faceted and complex."

She added: "This clause would provide protection for people who at present would have to guess on what basis they have been discriminated against, wholly outside their dignity."

The Equality Bill also contains proposals to reduce the gender pay gap through the introduction of equal pay audits in the private sector.
