Expansion of apprenticeship programme 'poses risks'

02/02/2012 Expansion of apprenticeship programme 'poses...A rapid expansion of the government's apprenticeship programme poses some risks that must be managed, the National Audit Office (NAO) has said.

Between 2006/07 and 2010/11 there has been a 140 per cent increase in the number of apprenticeships on offer in the UK.

However, last year almost one-fifth of placements lasted less than six months rather than one year.

Amyas Morse, head of the NAO, commented that the government "should set its sights higher in order to get better value from the £0.5 billion and rising now spent on adult apprenticeships each year".

"It needs to target resources more effectively; confirm the training provided is in addition to what would have been provided without public support; and make sure that the funding system is informed by robust information on the cost of delivery."

Figures from the NAO also show that most apprenticeships went to people aged over 25-years-old, accounting for 68 per cent of all placements.

While this may not effectively target the rising unemployment figures of young people in the UK, the report noted that the programme is 'well coordinated' and better managed than its previous incarnation, Train to Gain.
