Families play 'vital role' in promoting science careers
17/01/2012
Organisations must reach out to families to encourage young people to consider science careers, new research shows.
Families have been found to help their children access information about science jobs, but according to the
ASPIRES
research team at King’s College London, families from different social backgrounds need different types of support structures to do this.
They found that middle class families are more equipped to interpret careers information through documents and prospectuses as they are more comfortable with science. Meanwhile, lower class families might require interpersonal contact to help them make these decisions.
"We must find new ways to reach out to [families] to raise awareness of the huge breadth of career opportunities available from science," commented Science Council's education and skills director Nicola Hannam.
The ASPIRES team also found that children decide that science careers are not for them from as early as ten-years-old, even if they enjoy the subject at school. Parents and children also largely view the subject as being 'for boys'.
Indeed, the research showed that families with fewer science qualifications are less likely to be aware that a science career does not mean that people are necessarily scientists.
