Female IT professionals want gender equality to happen organically

14/12/2011 Female IT professionals want gender equality to happen...

Female IT professionals have said that they would like the proportion of female executives being promoted to senior boardrooms grow organically.

This is the finding of a recent survey by womenintechnology.co.uk, conducted at its latest event, hosted with ThoughtWorks in Manchester.

Respondents were largely against introducing mandatory quotas, with just 13 per cent saying they would like to see this happen.

Meanwhile, 15 per cent of respondents said they are in favour of softer targets for businesses to boost their female representation in the boardroom.

The attendees were largely undecided on whether or not men and women in the IT industry have the same opportunities, with 40 per cent of respondents agreeing to this, compared to 30 per cent who did not.

A survey conducted earlier this year by womenintechnology.co.uk and Intellect's Women in IT Forum found that 60 per cent of respondents had over a decade of experience but only a quarter reached senior management level.

Speaking at the time of the results, Maggie Berry, Managing Director of Women in Technology, said: "Breaking the glass ceiling is not about promoting gender equality for its own sake. There is an absolute business case – women are not a minority in a highly qualified tech talent pool and research from McKinsey & Co in 2007 clearly showed that organisations with strong female representation at top management and board level perform better than those without."
