Female-owned businesses increase 12% this year

14/12/2011 Female-owned businesses increase 12% this year 

The number of female-owned businesses set up in the UK this year has risen by 12 per cent, figures show.

According to Simply Business, they now account for 37 per cent of all British start-ups this year as more women choose to work for themselves.

While the ten most popular businesses set up by women were creative and services-based, such as cleaning companies, beauticians and cake makers, female entrepreneurs are also making a name for themselves in professional skills industries.

Accountancy and financial advisory firms were the tenth most popular female-owned start-up this year.

Jason Stockwood, chief executive of the business insurance brokers, commented: "With unemployment at its highest for 23 years it is encouraging to see that more and more women are embracing the opportunity to set up on their own.

"With more than ever high-profile businesswomen, like Mary Portas, Jo Malone and Michelle Mone, as inspiration … we expect the number of female entrepreneurs will keep on growing in the future."

Home secretary Theresa May, who is also the women's and equalities minister, recently announced that £2 million would be made available to train 5,000 volunteer role models to encourage more women to become entrepreneurs.
