G20's internet economy to double by 2016

27/01/2012 G20's internet economy to double by 2016The internet economy of the G20 nations will almost double by 2016, from $2.3 trillion (£1.5 trillion) in 2010 to $4.2 trillion.

This is down to the growing number of internet users around the world, which will rise to three billion by 2016, a report by The Boston Consulting Group shows. This represents 45 per cent of the world's population.

It predicted that in the next four years, almost 70 per cent of internet users in the G20 will be from emerging markets, with China growing in particular. A rise in the use of mobile devices will also be a large contributor to the internet economy.

"Understanding the economic potential of the web should be an urgent priority for leaders," commented Google's senior vice president and chief financial officer, Patrick Pichette.

He stressed that the report makes a "powerful case" for countries and businesses to "get online and reap the rewards of an age of data".

The report also highlighted the need for businesses to go digital and harness the possibilities the web offers.
