Gaming becoming centre of UK IT industry, says expert

04/11/2009 Gaming becoming centre of UK IT industry...Britain's video games industry is at the head of the country's IT and entertainment services, according to an industry expert.

The sector posted a record-breaking year in 2008 with revenues of more than £4 billion, and 2009 is set to be much higher.

Karl Gilbert, assistant producer of Team 17, the studio behind 'Worms' and 'Lemmings', spoke this week about the triumphs of the sector.

He said that Yorkshire especially has "a good reputation for developers", adding that the sector allows for a "diverse range of products and styles".

Mr Gilbert was speaking at the Leeds Gaming Expo, where among the trials for new games and technologies had representatives from BAFTA hosting careers surgeries, which allowed people to discuss career options with industry professionals.

Earlier this week, shadow culture secretary Ed Vaizey called for more funding to the industry, which he said provides positive UK exports of more than £100 million a year, along with contributing large amounts to the economy.
