Gender pay gap is a 'multi-faceted issue', says ACAS

11/03/2010 Gender pay gap is a 'multi-faceted issue'...Women are being paid less for a multitude of reasons, not simply because they are female, claims ACAS, an employment relations organisation.

Steve Williams, head of equality at ACAS, said that the gender pay gap is a "multi-faceted issue".

"There isn't one thing you can point to," he explained. "Many other things come into play and it is the interaction of these that contributes to the gender pay gap."

Mr Williams gave some reasons for this, such as occupational segregation, lower hourly rates for part-time work and the impact of caring responsibilities that often fall upon women.

This comment comes after the World Economic Forum's Corporate Gender Gap Report was released this week. It found that the UK's biggest companies are missing out on female talent in a number of sectors including careers for women in technology.

However, Mr Williams claimed that ACAS is making progress.

"It's important that part of the progress we have made is recognising the gender pay gap is there, it's real, and is a proxy for indicating disadvantages faced by women generally in comparison to men."
