Global computer grid used by UK

03/11/2008 Global computer grid used by UKA huge global grid for computers is being used by two technology companies in the UK in a new search engine project.

The grid has been designed to analyse the data that the Large Hadron Collider generated when the world's biggest scientific experiment was launched earlier this year.

However, it is also providing an opportunity for technologists in the UK, with Cambridgeshire companies Imense Ltd and iLexIR utilising its data in a joint venture called Camtology.

They hope to become a new force in the search engine market, with the aim to rival Google and others in image searching.

The project is being funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council, whose director chief executive, Keith Mason, commented: "We actively encourage the researchers we fund to consider the wider applications of the work they do.

"In this case, computing problems that had to be addressed for particle physics can also be used to solve other challenges with large amounts of data."

A successor to the Large Hadron Collider, the International Linear Collider, is already in the planning stages of its development.
