Google Instant divides critics

10/09/2010 Google Instant divides critics Google's latest technology launch has been received with mixed results.

The IT giant unveiled Google Instant yesterday (September 9th), publishing search results as the user types their query.

This means that the search engine predicts results even with partial keywords.

In a blog on launch day, Google said that the new tool "[yields] a smarter and faster search that is interactive, predictive and powerful".

However, in an article for the Daily Telegraph, Milo Yiannopoulos disagreed, calling the launch anti-climactic and not worth the billions of dollars of research.

Robin Goad from Hitwise UK highlighted the implications that Google Instant would have on online advertising, search engine optimisation (SEO) and search behaviour.

"The fact that Google Instant brings up so many more results than before makes the long-tail [keywords] crucial to future search success," he noted. "The real-time changes of Google Instant mean that users will alter their searches more to refine the information that is displayed on the results page."

He explained that long-tail key search term rankings will become increasingly important.
