22/02/2012 Government cuts 'threatening women's equality'Austerity measures imposed by the government are "threatening women's equality", the Fawcett Society has claimed.

Commenting on the recently-published Labour Market Statistics, which shows that the number of unemployed women is at a record 25-year high, Anna Bird, acting chief executive of the group, said this should be a "wake-up call to government".

"We are in a time of crisis," she said. "Cuts are threatening women's equality, as jobs dry up, benefits are slashed and vital public services disappear."

She noted that by 2015, 700,000 public sector workers will lose their jobs, of which women make up two-thirds of this number.

"Losing a job is devastating for anyone, man or woman," she remarked. "But women typically start off poorer, they tend to earn less, own less, and have less financial security than men."

However, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development claimed that these figures are not as startling as they first seem. Dr John Philpott, chief economic adviser at the organisation, said that rising female unemployment was caused by more women entering the market rather than a fall in the number of women in work.
