Government seeks to change employment law

13/01/2011 Government seeks to change employment lawThe government is seeking to change employment law, providing more flexibility to employers to hire and fire staff.

Recent reports have suggested that changes will include doubling the amount of time employees must have been with a company before they can lodge an unfair dismissal claim to two years.

Employees could also be forced to make a refundable payment when making a claim.

"Britain already has the weakest employment laws in Europe, leaving UK workers vulnerable and exposed to the whims of bad employer practices," argued Carolyn Jones, director general of the Institute of Employment Rights.

"For the economy to grow employers need to invest in their workforce so that workers are motivated, productive and loyal, not fearful and resentful," she claimed.

However, prime minister David Cameron has pledged to boost the number of jobs this year.

He said: "Across a whole range of areas you're going to see the most pro-business, pro-growth, pro-jobs agenda ever unleashed by a government."
