Green IT 'still important'

11/05/2009 Green IT 'still important'People in technology jobs are continuing to place emphasis on green IT, an industry expert has said.

Tracey Rawling Church, director of brand and reputation at Kyocera Mita, noted that green technology plans had been unaffected by the recession.

However, the focus behind such programmes had changed as a result of the downturn.

"If we look 12 months ago even, there was a much more CSR-led approach to greening office operations and that really now has switched to a focus on cost efficiency," she explained to an audience at the Green IT Conference and Exhibition in London last week.

"So, people have recognised that by taking a more sustainable approach to their office IT, in particular their printing and copying activities, they can actually save money."

In September 2008, a survey by Forrester Research found that more than half of respondents cited reducing energy consumption as their top priority for green IT.
