ICT teaching 'does not inspire pupils'

30/01/2012 ICT teaching 'does not inspire pupils'ICT teaching in schools does not inspire many pupils and fails to educate young people with anything beyond basic digital literacy skills.

This is the conclusion of a report by the Royal Society, titled Shut down or Restart? The way forward for computing in UK schools, which highlights the need for a new computing curriculum.

Analysing the current curriculum, the report found that as it can be broadly interpreted, teaching can be reduced to a low level when it is being taught be non-specialist teachers.

Indeed, the report stressed that there is a shortage of teachers with good IT skills, largely brought about by a lack of continued professional development for teachers of ICT.

Other findings of the report, which came about from a Computing in Schools project by professional bodies, universities, and industry, included the need for schools to recognise the importance of computer science and the IT careers it can lead to.

It also suggested that uptake of computing A-level could be improved with demand from universities.

The government has announced that a new computer science curriculum will be introduced in schools.
