Industry asks government to promote IT growth

18/03/2010 Industry asks government to promote IT growthSome of the UK's leading IT firms have called upon the government to promote technology, create IT jobs and make the sector the future of UK economic growth.

The Financial Times reported that firms have suggested the technology sector has the opportunity to become the future of the country's economic growth as manufacturing industries have declined.

John Higgins, director general of technology trade body Intellect, told the newspaper: "It is now widely recognised that we need to rebalance the UK economy. Rightly, there's a rush towards engineering and manufacturing. But software and technology are also going to be at the heart of growth in the 21st century.

"We ask why, when the UK has world-class science, managers, software engineers and international tech companies working here, there are too few UK tech companies in the FTSE 250?"

To accelerate the growth of technology, the firms have said that the government should provide tax relief for IT firms, especially for small businesses, but also on foreign direct investment so that overseas IT companies might re-locate to the UK.
