Inquiry held into women accessing finance for business

10/02/2012 Inquiry held into women accessing finance for...And inquiry has been held to examine why women find it difficult to access finance to set up businesses and how this can be rectified.

The All Party Parliamentary Small Business Group Entrepreneurship Inquiry heard from organisations including everywoman on how women can be supported to return to work and access skills and mentoring schemes.

Women and mature workers have been found to be less willing to take on the debt of a bank loan. The Federation of Small Businesses also spoke to the inquiry about why small firms struggle to access finance.

"It is an economic imperative that we see an increase in the number of women-owned businesses in the UK," commented Maxine Benson, co-founder of everywoman.

"Our research has shown that for many women a lack of confidence, access to finance and role models can prevent them from realising their full potential as entrepreneurs."

She highlighted the importance of skills training, confidence building and access to networks could help to get more women setting up their own business. 

The government has launched a scheme to encourage more women to become entrepreneurs.
