IT gender divide 'can be closed'

05/02/2010 IT gender divide 'can be closed'More women can be attracted to working in IT through education and the promotion of interest in the field, it has been claimed

A spokeswoman for the BCS, the Chartered Insititute for IT, said that there still is a gender divide in IT and in technology jobs.

She added: "There does appear to still be a gender divide. However, BCS is confident that this can be overcome by raising awareness and by providing education.

"The Savvy Citizens campaign is committed to meeting these two objectives and it is hoped it will go some way in closing that gap. Also, the BCS Women's Group is active in promoting the presence of women in IT and IT education."

BCS's Savvy Citizens campaign was launched towards the end of last year as a push to get more of the UK involved in technology, after only 20 per cent of Brits were found to be 'information-savvy citizens'.

The group hopes that through promoting female engagement in the technology sector, more women will be interested in pursuing IT careers.
