IT jobs market 'remains strong' in tough conditions

19/01/2012 IT jobs market 'remains strong' in tough...There will be strong demand for people in IT jobs in the coming year, despite a bleak outlook in other industries.

Commenting on the recent High Fliers graduate report, which found that IT and telecoms firms plan to hire 32 per cent more young people than in 2011, Andrew Tomlinson, policy advisor for the technology sector at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, said there are still opportunities in these sectors despite tough economic conditions.

"Despite the lack of confidence across the economy as a whole, this research again lays bare that demand remains healthy for workers with specialist skills and workplace experience," he noted.

Indeed, the research highlighted the importance of gaining work experience before graduating, as large IT, engineering and finance companies will put a high premium on skilled and experienced young people starting their careers.

Of the IT employers surveyed by High Fliers, 57 per cent said they will need graduates to work in IT functions in 2012.

In comparison to other industries, the latest labour market statistics show that unemployment rose by 118,000 between September and November last year.
