James Dyson encourages more engineer graduates

11/03/2010 James Dyson encourages more engineer graduatesSir James Dyson, inventor of the 21st century vacuum cleaner, has encouraged more young people to take up a career in science and engineering to project the UK as an industry world leader.

In a report for the Conservative Party, Mr Dyson also encouraged businesses to place more investment into research and development in engineering and technology.

Mr Dyson's plans for promoting engineering graduates include providing industry scholarships for engineers, where costs of bursaries are shared between the industry and the government. It also proposes offering greater freedom for universities. This would include developing shorter courses or more vocational degrees, particularly for women returning to work.

Speaking at the RenewableUK annual tidal and wave power conference, David Kidney, minister for energy and climate change, said: "We have an ageing workforce and a competing pool of young people in training. In order to remain competitive globally, British businesses will need ever more skilled employees to remain competitive."

These plans may come as welcome news to women looking to develop a career in engineering and technology.
