Lack of young people with STEM skills is 'concerning'

12/01/2012 Lack of young people with STEM skills is...The low number of young people with qualifications in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects is concerning, the chief executive of games trade association TIGA has said.

Richard Wilson highlighted the dilemma facing the UK's technology industries, stating that the number of pupils taking computer science for A-level has fallen by around 50 per cent in the last ten years.

"Equally at degree level, between 2004 and 2008 the proportion of students getting a degree in computer science fell by 25 per cent," he said. This means that there is not a steady supply of skilled people entering industries such as games development.

However, Dr Wilson added that schools are well-equipped with IT equipment. This could improve further with academy schools that are supported by businesses or charities, providing more opportunities to bring in better technology and equipment.

This week the government announced it will launch a consultation to radically overhaul the ICT curriculum in schools to replace it with a computer science programme.
