Managers 'afraid to take time off'

03/07/2009 Managers 'afraid to take time off'People in managerial roles have not yet booked time off for their summer holidays, new research has revealed.

The study by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) found that this is the case for four in ten managers, with the most common reasons being job insecurity and heavy workloads.

In addition, the study discovered that even managers who went on holiday could not leave the office behind, with 51 per cent checking work emails and 44 per cent accessing voicemails.

Ruth Spellman, chief executive of the CMI, said: "It is understandable that a heavy workload and the prospect of returning to a large amount of emails and outstanding tasks can deter people from taking time off, but holiday has a positive impact on staff well-being and boosts productivity."

The professional organisation has now launched a new campaign called Out of Office, which encourages people in management positions to book leave this summer.
