10/02/2012 PM: Economy will fail without women on boardsPrime minister David Cameron has claimed that the British economy will fail if there are not more women appointed to the country's biggest boardrooms.

He has this week attended the Northern Future Forum to discuss issues with nine countries, including female representation.

Mr Cameron will seek to take example from Nordic countries where female representation at senior level has been greatly improved.

"Women now make up nearly half the workforce across Europe and the majority of university degrees. But they are still not sufficiently represented at the senior boardroom level," he said.

"The evidence is that there is a positive link between women in leadership and business performance, so if we fail to unlock the potential of women in the labour market, we're not only failing those individuals, we're failing our whole economy."

If British businesses do not make better progress in boosting the number of women on boards, the government will look to introduce mandatory quotas.

Currently, women make up 15 per cent of FTSE 100 boardrooms.
