Positive figures revealed on UK broadband

03/09/2010 Positive figures revealed on UK broadbandNew figures from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) have revealed that the UK's broadband rollout is in line with the country's global competitors.

According to the ITU's statistics, the UK is performing comparatively well in both price and penetration of broadband services compared to other economically developed nations.

It was found that 29.8 per cent of every 100 UK inhabitants have a fixed broadband subscription, compared to 27.1 per cent for the US, 31.1 per cent for France and 30.4 per cent for Germany.

On average, it was found that a broadband subscription in the UK costs 0.63 per cent of people's monthly income.

The US was found to be slightly cheaper on 0.5 per cent while the cost in France and Germany was found to be 1.02 per cent and 1.23 per cent of monthly income respectively.

"Broadband is today's truly transformational technology," commented ITU secretary-general Dr Hamadoun Toure.

"It's not just about fast web browsing. Through e-health, e-education, e-government, smart grids, smart transport systems and much more, broadband will power economic and social progress in the 21st century."

The ITU is United Nations agency committed to developing information and communication technology systems throughout the world.
