07/02/2012 £6m apprenticeship fund to support tech sectorsA new Higher Apprenticeship Fund will allow businesses to bid for a share of £6 million to support the development of thousands of degree-level students entering technology careers in sectors including energy and renewable technologies.

The new fund has been announced as the UK marks National Apprenticeship Week, which runs until February 10th and aims to encourage more businesses to take on apprentices.

Small businesses are particularly being targeted to set up apprenticeships. The government has offered a new incentive of £1,500 for small businesses to hire their first young apprentice, which will support up to 40,000 new placements.

A new Employer Ownership pilot has also been launched for employers to access a share of up to £250 million to have more control over how skills training is delivered.

"By making apprenticeships a gold standard option for ambitious young people, we are sending a message that technical excellence is as highly valued as academic prowess," prime minister David Cameron commented.

"And by focusing investment where it is most needed to deliver sustainable growth and offering real ownership of vocational training to employers, we are equipping businesses with the skills they need to rebalance our economy and distribute opportunity more widely."
