Press 'aren't helping graduates'

02/12/2009 Press 'aren't helping graduates'Newspapers are panic stirrers who are hindering graduate job prospects, according to a graduate writer.

Constant stories about the lack of graduate job prospects are seen as unhelpful by South London Press columnist Marie-Therese Dobbin.

Ms Dobbin said: "Apparently we're all going to end up as overqualified shop assistants because the number of graduates/job vacancies available ratio doesn't quite add up."

She added that she felt optimistic as "recessions don't last forever and, five years from now, I'll be glad I have a degree when I'm in my chosen profession, even if I do have to fight that little bit harder for it."

Recent figures show graduate unemployment has increased 44 per cent in the past year, with 7.9 per cent of 2008 graduates out of work.
