Schools to teach computer science and programming

11/01/2012 Schools to teach computer science and programmingSchools will replace ICT teaching with more rigorous computer science and programming lessons, education secretary Michael Gove is to announce later today (January 11th).

It comes after a review into the school's IT curriculum was found to be inadequate for preparing pupils for IT careers.

Speaking at the BETT education technology show, Mr Gove is expected to brand ICT "harmful and dull" and will launch a consultation next week on a new curriculum.

Businesses and universities will be invited to have their say on the consultation and come up with new courses and exams and a new computing GCSE.

"Instead of children bored out of their minds being taught how to use Word or Excel by bored teachers, we could have 11-year-olds able to write simple 2D computer animations," he will say.

The new curriculum could equip children with the skills to enter programme manager jobs and other technical and creative roles, while in its current state Mr Gove said the courses are damaging to the UK economy.
