06/02/2012 Short apprenticeships 'can still be worthwhile'Short apprenticeship courses can still be worthwhile to a student so long as they are rigorously assessed and cover the right areas.

This is according to Spencer Mehlman, managing director of notgoingtouni.co.uk, who added that "short courses that mix theoretical and practical learning can be useful in preparing people for work".

His comments come after the National Audit Office (NAO) reported that last year, almost one in five apprenticeships lasted less than six months rather than the standard 12 months.

However, it did note that between 2006-07 and 2010-11 there has been a 140 per cent increase in the number of apprenticeships on offer in the UK.

"The government, schools and employers [must] put a sustained campaign of support together for apprenticeships," Mr Mehlman remarked.

"This would see them offered in millions of workplaces, explained clearly and without bias to students at school and supported from ministers."

He stressed that apprenticeships work, but echoed the NAO's concerns about their expansion that groups "need to make sure they are supported and developed".

Today (February 6th) marks the start of National Apprenticeship Week 2012 to raise the profile of the schemes.
