Should maths education be changed to further technology?

11/06/2010 Should maths education be changed to further...Maths education should be changed to encourage more people to take the subject, it has been suggested.

Conrad Wolfram, co-founder and strategic director of software company Wolfram Research, said: "Mathematics is more important to the world now than it has ever been in human history."

He urged that more should be done to encourage people to learn maths as technical jobs and related industries rely on the subject knowledge.

Mr Wolfram was speaking at the London Computational Knowledge Summit, which discussed how advances in computational technology are unlocking knowledge assets and shaping the future.

"My argument is that maths does not equal calculation," he said, arguing that computers are better at this, but the government must seek to "disentangle" the two.

A recent survey by the Confederation of British Industry found that nearly half of employers are having difficulty recruiting people with skills in science, technology, engineering and maths, or STEM subjects, suggesting that there is a lack of knowledge in the UK.

However, the government has pledged to bring the country into the forefront of technology development.
