Smartphone apps prescribed to patients by GPs

23/02/2012 Smartphone apps prescribed to patients by GPsGPs are to start prescribing smartphone apps to their patients to help them monitor their health when away from the doctor's surgery.

It comes after the Department of Health last year asked people in software development jobs and even non-technologists to come up with ideas for apps that would help people manage their conditions.

After receiving almost 500 entries, the best app ideas have now been revealed and could be recommended by GPs.

They include apps that help patients manage long-term conditions like diabetes, monitor blood pressure and find NHS services in the UK.

The latter app, NHS Choices, attracted 14.5 million people looking for information last month.

"Innovation and technology can revolutionise the health service, and we are looking at how the NHS can use these apps for the benefit of patients, including how GPs could offer them for free," commented Health Secretary Andrew Lansley.

One of the apps, Patients Know Best, has already proved a success. It allows users to access their records from all of their clinicians and have online consultations with any member, receive explanations of their results and develop a personalised care plan.
