SMEs with web focus 'are driving economic growth'
26/01/2012
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that work on the web are the "unsung heroes of the economy" and drive economic growth more than internet giants like Google, one executive from the company has said.
Matt Brittin, Google's vice-president of sales and operations for northern and central Europe, told the Daily Telegraph that while people might immediately bring to mind Google, Spotify and eBay when thinking about the internet, it is SMEs that are more important.
"The internet gives them a voice," he explained.
His comments come after Google and think tank
The Lisbon Council
launched a project to examine how SME's contribution to the economy can be accelerated with the internet.
It claims that companies embracing the internet into their business model grow at twice the rate of those that do not.
However, Mr Brittin stressed that the internet must be at the heart of a business and not an add-on.
"We're at a point of inflection from the Internet being a specialised thing to being, like electricity, something you have to do to do your job better," he remarked.
