Theresa May: Feminism is about equal opportunity

24/01/2012 Theresa May: Feminism is about equal opportunityTheresa May has said that feminism is about ensuring there's a level playing field between men and women and providing equal opportunity.

In an interview with Total Politics magazine, the home secretary, who is also minister for women and equality, spoke about the responsibility she has being the most senior woman in government.

"There's an added reason for me to try to do my best - to show that a woman in this position can do my job," she said.

However, Ms May told the magazine that she does not necessarily believe in role models, suggesting that they are "paradoxical".

"It’s just not naturally 'me'. I don’t say: 'Oh, I want to be like X'. I don’t go about my business in that way," she added.

Ms May has encouraged female leaders to become mentors to younger women though and has set up an organisation to encourage more female Conservative MPs, called Women2Win.

Currently, women represent 16 per cent of Conservative MPs and 31 per cent of Labour MPs.
