Top female role models in IT named

16/02/2010 Top female role models in IT namedA list of the some of the top women in IT has been compiled by an industry commentator.

The female entrepreneurs in technology represent some of the powerhouses of the industry, many of whom have built their businesses from the ground up, according to ComputerWeekly magazine, who compiled the list.

Among those celebrated as IT entrepreneurs are heads of companies such as free-website creation service Moon Fruit, operated by Wendy Tan White and virtual dedicated servers provider Memset, which is run and co-founded by Kate Craig-Wood.

However, the list ventures into different categories of technology, showing a wide variety of female role models in IT.

Hermione Way, a media and technology entrepreneur, has built her empire around online news.

Her site Newspepper.com provides social media news and internet video, while Techfluff TV is a dedicated light-weight and jargon-free tech news site.

Cate Sevilla, founder of Bitchbuzz, another such technology news website, dismissed notions that some women in IT are not real techies.

"A lot of people don't like it that people like me say we're in technology. But I am in tech. Running an online publication, you need to know HTML, Google analytics, use Dreamweaver.

"It may only be the tip of the iceberg, but it's still technical. I wish that more women would acknowledge they're in technology and not be afraid of what hardcore geeks say."
