Tory open-source policy 'misguided'

06/02/2009 Tory open-source policy 'misguided'Conservative calls for the government to adopt open-source solutions are "misguided", according to an industry expert.

A report commissioned by the party and compiled by Dr Mark Thompson from Cambridge University, suggested that the government could save large amounts of money by using open source.

However, Richard Kirk, Fortify Software vice president and general manager of Europe, argued that open source poses several security problems.

"The Conservatives have accused the government of failing to capitalise on open-source software, despite reports from government agencies that have recommended its usage," he said.

"Our own research, however, has concluded that open-source software exposes users to significant and unnecessary business risk, as the security is often overlooked, making users more vulnerable to security breaches."

The government has been criticised for allowing a number of its IT projects to go over budget, such as the NHS patient record system, which is years behind schedule and billions of pounds over budget.
