Two-thirds of women see quotas as 'necessary'

23/02/2012 Two-thirds of women see quotas as 'necessary'As the majority of female leaders think it will take up to 20 years for just 30 per cent of executive boardrooms to be made up of women, two-thirds see mandatory quotas as a necessity.

This is according to a poll by leadership consultancy White Water Group, seen by HR Magazine, which asked the leaders of 30 corporate women's networks on their view of women on boards, 12 months after Lord Davies published his report on the issue.

Over the year, two-thirds (66.7 per cent) of women had seen no change to the makeup of their company boardroom and the same number believe that quotas must be enforced in order to reach the target of a 25 per cent representation by 2015.

"Quotas may be a blunt instrument but they may be inevitable," Averil Leimon, co-founder of White Water Group, told the news provider.

She highlighted the importance of offering mentoring schemes for women, improving fair work practices and encouraging more female role models as ways to help women advance in their careers.

The survey comes after prime minister David Cameron said the economy will fail if there are not more women on senior boardrooms and threatened to introduce quotas if the situation is not improved.
