UK must continue with engineer training, EPSRC says

03/03/2010 UK must continue with engineer training...The government must continue to fund research and training of graduate engineers in order for the UK to become a leading nation for future technologies.

This is the view of Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), a government agency for funding and training of the industry.

Attila Emecz, director of communications and information at the EPSRC, has said that while an increase in funding may not be available, research must continue at the same level as before, even if budgetary cuts have to be made.

"We would consider maintaining the UK's position as an internationally leading research nation ? as a particular priority and this would mean ensuring that we can both retain and attract the most talented researchers," he said.

This comes after a letter published in the Observer last Sunday (February 28th) criticised the government for focussing more on graduates with careers in science, technology, engineering and maths over the arts and humanities.

However, Mr Emecz defended the government, expressing the importance these industries have in other disciplines such as medical advances.
