Warning over lack of students taking up IT

01/09/2010 Warning over lack of students taking up ITWomen with qualifications in IT could become a highly-prized commodity in the near future as the number of UK students taking up IT declines.

IT sector skills council e-skills UK has said that a "radical review" is needed to overhaul uninspiring technology curriculums in schools.

It follows the publication of figures showing there has been a decline in the number of A-level students taking up IT-related courses in recent years.

The number of A-level ICT students ahs fallen eight per cent from 13,360 to12,275 since 2007.

"We believe that a radical review of the technology curriculum in schools is essential, bringing together the views of employers and academics to create an inspiring curriculum that is attractive to students, and is valued for progression to university and to employment," Margaret Sambell, director of strategy at e-Skills UK, told computing.co.uk

She added that the problem would have a negative affect on the UK as it would hinder the country's ability to compete in a technology-intensive global economy.

Despite the decline in pupils taking IT-related A-Levels, there was an increase in the number of young people taking A-levels in science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects this year, figures show.
