Web users publishing details 'open to be spammed'

03/02/2009 Web users publishing details 'open to be spammed'Web users who are worried about receiving spam should not publish their details online, experts have urged.

By including contact information anywhere on the web, consumers leave themselves open to getting spam, according to Hostway.

However, this is even more likely if using an online directory, as this has all the details in one place.

Thomas Herbert, product manager at Hostway, observed that "the wrong people" are likely to find details.

"It will make it a one stop place for spammers to grab the information but the majority of this information can be accessed anyway," he said.

"It's not really that much different from having your contact details on a webpage anyway. The fact that you're publishing your contact details means that it's open to be spammed."

The launch of dot tel by Telnic is set to take place today (February 3rd), which the firm describes as an "innovative new top level domain". Individuals can purchase their own address from 3pm.
