Wikipedia seeks out female contributors

09/08/2011 Wikipedia seeks out female contributorsWikipedia, the online encyclopaedia written by the general public, is on the search for more female contributors. 

Jimmy Wales, who founded the website in 2001, claims that as the majority of its unpaid staff are "26-year-old geeky, male[s]" and they lack expertise in some areas.

The lack of diversity among the contributors means that pages on science and technology are "strong", Mr Wales told the Independent, while other issues are weaker such as biographies of famous women and pages on early childcare.

He told the news provider: "The main thing is to bring in people of all different backgrounds. If you do that, you increase the knowledge base of the site, which can only be a good thing."

Numbers of contributors to the site have fallen slightly from 36,000 in June 2010 to 35,800 in June this year. Mr Wales stressed that he wants to recruit more writers in order to improve the website's accuracy and reach.
