Women 'under-represented' in technology
12/09/2008
Women are still being under-represented in science, engineering and technology (SET) jobs, analysts have suggested.
The total workforce for SET industries is made up of a far larger percentage of men than women, with females making up just 18.7 per cent of employees.
A
UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology
survey also found that 38 per cent of people were not concerned by women's under-representation in engineering.
However, more staff are needed in the industries, with a 300,000 recruitment shortfall expected "in the next few years", the Independent reports.
Philip Whiteman, chief executive of the sector skills council
SEMTA
, believes there is hope for change in the future, but lots of work needs to be done to achieve more equality in the SET industries.
"There is definitely no shortage of schools, universities, companies, professional bodies, specialist organisations and government policies attempting to attract more women into SET and enabling them to reach the top once they're in," he told the newspaper.
"But there is still a long way to go."
