Women add social element to their online gaming

02/02/2012 Women add social element to their online gamingWomen have been shown to prefer online games that have a social element to them, according to new research.

Statistics from the annual State of Gaming review by Spil Games show that four of the top five games for women were social or had some kind of social element to them.

Social elements to games were also found to be the most popular among girls.

The report also highlighted the growing presence of online gaming around the world, citing figures by comScore, which showed almost 50 per cent of the global online community now play online games.

On Spil Games' three websites, 170 million played last year, an increase of 40 million on 2010.

Peter Driessen, chief executive of Spil Games, commented that social gaming encourages players to "create, connect and share".

He added: "2011 marked the year online games came of age, and we expect the number of players to continue to grow, cementing their position as the most dominant way we're playing."
