Women disagree on gender equality in business
10/03/2010
Female perceptions about gender equality in business and
career development
differs greatly from men's, new research has shown.
A study by
PricewaterhouseCoopers
(PwC) revealed that 44 per cent of men believe that women and men have an equal share of the top jobs, while only 23 per cent of women think this to be true.
Nearly four in ten women said that they had to work harder to develop their career to reach the top of a company, but only a fifth of men believed the same.
Sarah Churchman, director of diversity at PwC, said: "It's no surprise that men think equality has progressed more than women. Some men don't realise what it's like to face a macho male-dominated culture in a working environment.
Ms Churchman said that a lot had been done to improve gender equality in the City, "but the underlying impression is still that women have to battle harder to get to the top," she said. "It's in our nature to feel we have to prove to ourselves, and others, we can do the job."
